I have a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and a Postgraduate Certificate in Literacy and Learning. Having qualified as a teacher over twenty years ago at the prestigious and well-renowned Institute of Education, I've worked in education in varying capacities including Class teacher, Subject Leader, Teacher of the Deaf, Action Researcher and Supply Teacher.

Originally qualifying as an A-Level teacher before continuing my career in Secondary and Primary Schools, I have vast experience of the curriculum as a whole, as well as the most effective approaches, strategies, and resources for ensuring academic success.

Accelerate the progress of your child/children’s writing with Inspire My Learning.

Great writing isn’t formulaic. Unfortunately it’s often taught as if it is, but an adverbial starter and infinite list of flashy adjectives does not a good writer make!

You can’t create a tick box that equals good writing. It’s not that easily measurable because great writing is subjective. Its efficacy depends upon the effect it has on the reader.

I’ve taught many children who were encouraged to tick boxes in order to guarantee a good piece of writing, but if it doesn’t flow, make sense and engage the reader, it’s not going to be as effective as it could be. The reader will turn off pretty quickly if it’s apparent that the author is box ticking.

Yes punctuation and grammatical rules can indeed be ticked off a list.

But these are tools to ensure the meaning is transferred accurately to the reader. Great writing is about effectively communicating your thoughts into someone else’s head without speaking to them. It’s probably the closest thing you can get to telepathy whilst remaining in the realms of reality! And how successful a communication it is will be judged by its effect on the reader, the recipient of the communication. It’s all about the effect on the audience so a lot of emphasise needs to be placed on being objective about one’s own writing. Which isn’t easy.

Reading is arguably the most important skill that a child, or indeed an adult could possess. It opens the world up and allows access to so much of what life has to offer. The fluency with which a person reads can affect their ability to access all other subjects. It is crucial for gathering information, whether that be for academic purposes, or a multitude of others, as well as providing a limitless source of entertainment and pleasure.

English Literature for Kids:

My most requested tuition focus. This is valuable for all children - perhaps especially for those who would rather do anything else but read!

Focusing on both classic and modern works, we delve into the wonders of great literature. Through text analysis and exploration, children's understanding and appreciation of literature develops dramatically.

Maths Tutoring

Maths is the language of the universe. If you conquer it you will be one of those brilliant people who figure out who we are and why we are all here! But we all have to start with the basics, and some people get put off, even at that stage.
If your child struggles with maths it could be because it has not been presented in an accessible way that helps them visualise the relationships between numbers and operations, (in a way that makes sense to them), or it could be because of challenges in processing mathematical information that requires specific strategies and approaches to overcome.
Unfortunately the reality of teaching in schools requires a pace that isn’t appropriate for everybody. And many children need to secure the basics of number, relationships and patterns before moving on to apply that knowledge in different ways e.g. problem solving and reasoning. At Inspire My Learning we find fun ways to consolidate the basics, so that children feel confident and secure enough to then move on to problem solving and more complex applications, which need specific, explicitly taught skills and practice.
